Red Rocks Engagement Photos
Permits, timing, wind, and the spots in the park that actually photograph well.
Red Rocks Park in Morrison sits fifteen minutes from Denver and gives you 300-foot sandstone formations, open foothills, and the city on the horizon, all inside one small park. It is also busy, windy, and full of scheduled events, so a good session there is mostly a matter of timing and knowing which corners to use.
Permits and access
The park is managed by Denver Mountain Parks. Small portrait sessions in the open areas of the park are usually fine without paperwork, while the amphitheatre itself is restricted, regularly closed for events and concert setup, and treated differently from the trails and overlooks around it. Rules and fees for commercial photography do change, so I verify the current requirements and the event calendar for your date rather than assuming.
When to shoot
Sunrise is the best hour here: soft warm light on east-facing rock, empty parking lots, and no event traffic. Sunset light is gorgeous but you share the park with concertgoers and stair-climbers. Spring afternoons are the windiest, and summer thunderstorms build fast, so early is almost always the answer.
Planning around the wind
Expect wind. Choose fabrics that move well instead of fighting them, bring a hair tie for between frames, and let a few windblown images stay in the gallery, they usually end up being the ones couples print. Jaya and Grant's session ran in serious wind and it never slowed the day down.
The spots worth your time
- Trading Post loop: tight red formations, scrub oak, and shade pockets. Best for close, intimate frames.
- Ship Rock and the upper lots: wide backdrops with Denver behind you, ideal for a big sky look.
- Park road spines: clean side light on sandstone early in the morning, and easy to reach without a hike.

Red Rocks FAQ
Red Rocks engagement session questions, answered
Do you need a permit for engagement photos at Red Rocks?
Red Rocks Park is part of Denver Mountain Parks, and casual portrait sessions in the open park areas generally do not require a permit, while commercial shoots, large groups, tripod-and-lighting setups, and anything inside the amphitheatre itself do. The amphitheatre also closes to the public for events and concert load-ins, which changes day to day. I check the park calendar and current permit rules for your date before we lock a start time.
What is the best time of day for Red Rocks engagement photos?
Sunrise, by a wide margin. The park is quiet, parking is easy, and the rock formations glow warm from the east. The amphitheatre is often full of stair-climbers early, so we work the Trading Post and Ship Rock areas instead. Sunset also looks beautiful but brings crowds and event traffic.
How windy is Red Rocks?
Very, especially in spring and late afternoon. Wind is the single most common surprise at Red Rocks sessions, and it is worth planning for rather than fighting: bring a hair tie, skip the wide-brim hat, and expect a few frames where a veil or dress becomes part of the photo. Jaya and Grant's session was extremely windy and it still produced some of my favorite images of the year.
Where should we shoot inside Red Rocks Park?
The Trading Post loop for the tight red formations and scrub, Ship Rock and the upper lots for wide-open backdrops with Denver behind you, and the sandstone spines along the park road for clean side light. All three are within a few minutes of each other, which is why the park works well for a 60 to 90 minute session.
How much does a Red Rocks engagement session cost?
Engagement sessions are booked as a standalone session or included at no cost with my 6 and 8 hour wedding collections when your wedding is within an hour of Denver. Send me your date and I'll quote it directly, there are no travel fees anywhere in Colorado.
How long should a Red Rocks engagement session be?
Between one and two hours. Ninety minutes lets you use two or three distinct areas of the park and a wardrobe change without racing the light, which is the format most couples pick.

In their words
The part that matters most.
"He gets to know who you are as a couple."
Riley is an angel. His work is impeccable and so personal. He is truly passionate about what he does and he exudes kindness. What I really love about Riley is that he gets to know who you are as a couple. He builds a relationship with you and it is truly bittersweet that after over a year of working together, the day finally came and went. From the moment we met him he was so personable and easy to talk to. We knew immediately following our engagement shoot that we wanted him to be our wedding day photographer. My husband and I both have a difficult time feeling comfortable when our picture is being taken and he made the experience so easy and fun. We have felt such a multitude of emotions looking at what he has captured and we can't thank him enough!!
